What Can You Do To Help Prevent Florida Nursing Home Abuse?

Our loved ones who are placed in Florida nursing homes, assisted living facilities or adult family care homes are sometimes often forgot about. Although this should not be the case, sadly it often is. Many residents of these senior facilities are victims of old age, mental illness, and other injuries. Because most of them cannot advocate for themselves, they need someone to speak out on their behalf when they are mistreated.

What can you do to stop nursing home abuse in Florida from occurring to your loved one?

  • Visit the facility often
  • Visit at different times of the day or night
  • Look for signs of abuse
  • Talk to the nurses frequently so they know you care
  • Speak with other residents or the families of other residents regarding their experiences
  • If you cannot personally check up on your loved one, you may be able to get a volunteer to look in on them

What can be done when Florida nursing home abuse occurs?

When nursing home abuse is suspected, there are different authorities you can contact. One such organization that investigates these types of complaints is a volunteer organization called the Ombudsman Program, under the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. These trained volunteers advocate for senior residents in these types of facilities. They investigate complaints of elder abuse in Florida and make recommendations to improve resident conditions.

In 2010, this organization investigated more complaints than they have ever had in their 35-year history. They had a total of 9,098 complaints, said Elder Affairs Interim Secretary Charles T. Corley. “It reflects the dedication of these volunteers who give up their time every day to make life better for residents who cannot stand up for themselves.”

Remember that abuse can occur in different forms, such as: physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental and verbal abuse, neglect, malnutrition, bed sores, and more. If you have reason to believe that elder abuse is occurring in a senior facility, please call the Florida Abuse Hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week toll-free 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873).
