Just How Serious Are Knee Injuries In Florida Bicycle Accidents?

People use their knees to stand, walk, sit, and do just about everything. When a knee gets injured, it can turn someone’s world upside down in an instant. Unfortunately, many cyclists who have injured their knees in South Florida bicycle accidents have been negatively impacted by some of the following knee injuries:

  • ACL Tear – when the Anterior Cruciate Ligament is torn, it can cause a person extreme pain, swelling, and immobility. This main knee ligament supports the outside of the knee and can prevent someone from bearing weight and walking without crutches when the ligament is torn.

  • MCL Tear – when the Medial Collateral Ligament is torn, it can also cause pain and swelling of the knee. This ligament supports the inside of the knee and can cause widening of the inside of the knee when it is torn.

  • PCL Tear – when the Posterior Collateral Ligament is torn, it can also cause pain and swelling of the knee. Additionally, it can feel like your knee is buckling when walking.

  • Torn Meniscus – when the medial and lateral meniscus tears, it can cause a person’s body weight to be unevenly distributed on the tibia and femur which can cause pain and degenerative damage.

Ligaments and cartilage provides stability to the knee. When they are damaged and knee injuries occur, people lose their mobility and may have to spend time resting, icing their knees, and going to physical therapy. Depending on the seriousness of the knee injury, rest, ice, and physical therapy might not be enough. Sometimes surgery may be required followed by another round of rest, ice and physical therapy.

A knee injury following a South Florida bicycle accident is not only painful, but it is a major inconvenience. Unfortunately, injured cyclists who have suffered knee injuries in crashes often have to miss out on earning a living, participating in their normal activities, or even taking their planned vacations.

While knee injuries might not be life-threatening, they are definitely painful and bothersome to say the least. Sometimes, knee injuries cause people to be off their legs and out of work for six months or more.
