While some workplace accidents involve serious incidents resulting in disabling injuries, other on the job accidents take place over time due to repetitive motions. Because there are many different ways an employee can get injured at work, there are many different types of workplace injuries that deserve workers’ compensation benefits.
Although there are various workplace accidents and injuries, there are five that lead the nation’s workers’ compensation costs, according to data compiled by Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. The following are the top five types of workers’ comp injuries:
- Overexertion injuries. These types of workplace injuries often occur from workers carrying items, holding and lifting objects, and pushing or pulling something on the job.
- Fall on the same level. This can occur from torn carpeting, objects left on the floor, poor lighting, or a number of other reasons. These on the job accidents often cause disabling injuries for workers.
- Fall to lower level. This type of workplace accident typically occurs in construction sites when negligence occurs or proper equipment isn’t used. Injuries that come about from this type of on the job accident are generally debilitating or fatal.
- Bodily reaction. These types of injuries occur from reaching, climbing, bending, sitting, standing, and slipping without falling.
- Struck by object. This type of on the job accident generally occurs in construction sites, roadside or highway work, or manufacturing. When workers are hit by heavy equipment, serious and even fatal injuries occur.
There are many other types of workplace accidents including struck against objects, repetitive motion, compressed mishaps, and even assaults.
