Motorcyclists know they are at an increased risk for suffering brain injuries in crashes — especially those who don’t wear helmets — but that doesn’t make a brain injury any less severe. Unfortunately, brain injuries are a very real outcome of motorcycle collisions for bikers with and without helmets.
Anytime the head hits the ground or suffers a blow in a collision, it can cause the brain to violently shake around inside the skull. When this happens, contusions and lacerations to the brain can occur and blood vessels can be torn. As a result, bleeding can take place in the brain, also known as brain hemorrhaging, which can cause brain damage.
There are three main types of brain hemorrhages that can occur in motorcycle accidents, including:
- Subarachnoid hemorrhages. This type of bleeding occurs in the area between the brain and the protective tissues that cover the brain. Sometimes surgery will need to be performed in order to remove the blood that is putting pressure on the brain, in an effort to eliminate further brain damage.
- Epidural hemorrhages. With this type of hematoma, the bleeding occurs between the outer skull and the brain’s outer covering. It is typically the result of ruptured blood vessels, in which the blood collects and presses on the brain. When this type of injury occurs, it is common that a skull fracture has also occurred as well as a serious brain injury.
- Subdural hemorrhages. This is the most serious type of hematoma, as is can be life-threatening. It occurs between the brain and the dura, the brain’s outer covering, and the bleeding can fill the brain very quickly. Sadly, this type of brain injury is almost always deadly.
Depending on the location of the impact and type of hemorrhage a motorcyclist suffers will determine how severe the brain injury. Sadly, some brain injuries cause brain damage, memory loss, paralysis, permanent intellectual disabilities, the inability to work and make a living, and other long-term issues and changes.
