School Bus Safety Week Reminds Kids & Parents to Review Safety Tips

Many cities, schools, and traffic officials recommend children taking the bus to school because it is one of the safest ways to get children to school. Also, it reduces the amount of cars on the road in and around the school zone – ultimately, reducing the amount of child pedestrian-involved car accidents.

When parents put their children on school buses as a way to get to and from school safely, they assume this will be the result. However, just because a school bus is big and transports kids, doesn’t mean it is safe. Here’s what parents and kids need to know about school bus safety, especially in light of School Bus Safety Week from October 19-24, 2015.

Getting to the Bus

  • Children should walk to the school bus stop with their parents or other adult whenever possible.

  • Children should leave plenty of time to get to the bus stop so they are there ahead of the bus and aren’t in a rush.

  • Children should never chase the bus or run in the bus stop area.

  • Children should stand away from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop and the doors open.

Riding on the Bus

  • Children need to stay seated in their seats until the bus comes to a complete stop.

  • Children need to keep their arms inside the bus windows.

  • Children need to talk in a normal volume so the bus driver isn’t distracted.

  • Children need to report any bad behavior they see the bus driver engage in, such as texting and driving.

Exiting the Bus

  • Children need to walk off of the bus and not run off of it.

  • Children need to make sure the bus driver sees them before walking in front of the bus.

  • Children need to look both ways when needing to cross the street after exiting the bus.

  • Children need to remember to be alert because drivers of cars might not see them or stop for them.

Even if children follow these rules, they may still be involved in a bus accident or a pedestrian accident due to driver negligence.
